Your Life Is What You Practice, Not What You Wish For

In this wisdom talk, we are going to deal with five things. First, why your job alone cannot change your life. Second, why working on yourself matters more than working on your job. And third, the big excuses that we all give. And fourth, six simple steps to begin. And fifth, the hard truth about self-work. At the end of this speech, you will have some understanding of a new way of thinking, the courage to restart your life when you fall instead of quitting, and the power to choose which version you become.
So, let us begin.
Look at your life today. Look at your bank account, your habits, your health, your friendships, your peace of mind. None of it appeared by accident, right? Your life is the sum of what you have practiced, not what you have wished for. Most of us were taught one lesson from childhood: work hard at your job, and so on and so on, right? Show up early, stay late, do what the boss says. That is good advice, and I'm not here to tell you to be lazy. But I am here to tell you something that nobody told you in school: a job can pay your bills, but only you can pay your dreams.
This is something that many of us did not learn. Actually, we learned it the hard way. You might be a great guy who works for God. You might be a great guy who works for a devil. Both do not matter. Your job can pay your bills, but only you can pay for your dreams. Think about that. You give eight, nine, sometimes ten hours a day to your work. You study the task. You learn the system. You try to impress people. And at the end of the month, you receive a salary that is, in most cases, just enough to let you come back and do it again, right? If you work harder on your job than on yourself, you will make a living, but you will never make a life.
This is the truth with anything, for that matter, including spirituality. You might read the holiest books on earth. You might meet the holiest men and women on earth. You might dip in the holiest water on earth. How does it matter? If you cannot live in this world, navigate your life, take responsibility, then it is not spirituality at all. Anybody can abandon and walk away.
You see, here is the truth: your job is a rented room. You do not own it. The company can change its plan, cut its budget, or close its door and walk away. Your manager can leave, and with that, your whole future there can shift overnight. But what you build inside yourself can never be repossessed, can never be taken away. Your skills, your mind, your character, your discipline, your health, and your courage go wherever you go. They are the only property that no one can take from you.
So ask yourself an honest question: When was the last time you worked as hard on yourself as you work for your employer, or for your employees, or for your boss, and so on and so on? When did you last read a book that made you uncomfortable? When did you last learn a skill that nobody forced you to learn? When did you last wake up early? Not for a meeting, but for your own growth, for your own family, for your own beloved, and so on and so on. You see, we give our best hours to people who pay us, and our leftover hours to those persons whom we value most in our life and who live with us forever. Look how pathetic we all have become. That is backwards. And I want you to feel how backwards it is.
Imagine a farmer who spends all day planting seeds in his neighbor's field, and at night he walks home to his house, where behind his house is just a patch of dirt, and so on and so on. He's busy, of course. He's tired. He's even respected for his effort, right? But when winter comes, his neighbor's table is full, and his own house is empty, or his backyard is empty. Being busy is not the same as building. Reading a spiritual book is not the same as becoming spiritual. Falling at the feet of a guru is not becoming spiritual. Not falling at the feet of, uh, or dipping your body in the holy Ganges and holy waters is not being spiritual. Wisdom comes not by reading or listening or meeting people like me. Wisdom comes by you turning your mind with it.
So do not misunderstand me here. I'm not trying to say be a pathetic human being. Your job can be a wonderful teacher. It can give you experience, money, and connections. Use it, learn from it, but treat it as a school, not a destination. The job is a ladder. You are the one who must climb. Many people stand at the bottom of the ladder for thirty years, polishing it and wondering why they have not reached the roof. This has happened. This happens with everybody.
Now, why does working on yourself change your life more than working on your job? Let me give you three reasons.
The first reason is that a job grows you in one direction, but self-work grows you in every direction. Your job teaches you what the job needs, but life needs much more. It needs emotional strength when you lose someone. It needs patience when plans fall apart. It needs clear thinking when money is tight. It needs the courage to say no. That is an important point: the courage to say no, or the wisdom to say yes, and the humility to say sorry. No job description lists these things. Yet they decide whether you are happy or miserable. You see, a promotion can raise your title, man. But only growth can raise your life. This is the truth.
The second reason is that your income rarely rises higher than your personal growth. Look at people around you. People who earn more are usually people who learned more, solved bigger problems, or became someone others trust. A rise is often a reward for the person you become before the rise arrived. So if you want more, do not just ask for more. Become more. You cannot pour a bigger life into a smaller you.
The third reason is the deepest one: when you change yourself, the world around you has no choice but to change. Let me tell you from my own experience. When you become real, when you focus on your career and not on silly, petty distractions, unwanted people will leave you. Even the person who loved you will leave you. Because this is the hard truth. You see, as a man, we are expected to man up. We are expected to be the provider and protector. And when we follow that duty without giving excuses, there is no time for silly, petty distractions. There is no time for criticism. There is no time for all those unwanted people and unwanted circumstances. People, situations, friendships, and even desires will leave you if you have a goal in your head. Only a person who has no goal is distracted. If you are distracted, that clearly means you have no goal. It's as simple as that.
You see, if you think differently, you choose differently. If you choose differently, you act differently. If you act differently, you get different results. It is bound to happen. It is not magic. It is a chain. Every changed life began with one changed thought. The outside is just the inside made visible. It's as simple as that. There is nothing great about it. Nothing spiritual about it. Nothing so complicated like rocket science.
I know what some of you are thinking. You might say, "I am too tired. I have family. I have bills. I do not have time," and so on and so on. I hear you. Nobody has time. Everybody has family. Everybody has to pay their bills. Nobody's going to come like a god and tell you, "I'm going to take care of your bills from now onwards," and so on and so on. If that happens, you are bound. You are just fallen into the pit. That's the truth. I hear you, and I respect you. I'm not asking for hours you do not have. I'm asking for the small, honest minutes that you currently give away to noise.
Thirty minutes of scrolling can become thirty minutes of reading. You see, I don't spend my time scrolling Instagram and watching pathetic people eat some random food in this world. I spend my time on piano so that I can learn beautiful songs and entertain my future wife, so that when she's bored, I can play musical instruments. It's as simple as that. You see, a tired walk home can become a walk with a podcast that teaches you something. A quiet evening can become one page of writing about a person you want to be. Time is not found. It is taken. And once you take it, you will be surprised how much of it was always yours. Time for everything, everything in its time.
Let me tell you how to begin. It is simpler than you think.
First, know who you are today. Be honest. Brutally honest. Where are you weak? What do you avoid? What do you complain about but never fix? The first step to a new life is to stop lying about the old one. You cannot repair a house if you refuse to admit the roof leaks. You cannot face your sadness if you refuse to say that it is sadness. If you run away into spirituality like a cover, nothing can be done. Face your emotions. That's the fastest and shortest way to heal. I always say the fastest way to heal is to feel. It's as simple as that.
Second, decide what you want to become. Not what job you want, but what kind of person: disciplined, or calm, or skilled, generous, healthy, and so on and so on. Write it down. A vague dream gives you vague results, man. A clear picture pulls you forward. A blurry one lets you drift away.
Third, build daily habits, not occasional bursts. Do not wait for a perfect Monday or a new year. Big change is made of boring days. One page, one push-up more, and so on and so on. You see, I do push-ups. I can't do push-ups like all these people who do a hundred or fifty. I hardly do fifteen to twenty. But it's okay. I begin somewhere. That's how it is. One honest conversation, one hour of focused learning. Small steps taken daily will always beat big giant leaps taken rarely. The river does not carry the entire thing with one great flood, but with patient water day after day. It's as simple as that.
And the fourth, protect your mind like you protect your phone, or like how you protect your beloved. Do not waste time with people who gossip. Do not waste time with people who describe the, you know, messenger, and so on and so on. Spend time with people who debate the message, not the messenger. Still, we are living in this world where people are still obsessed with Jesus, Krishna, Rama, and gurus more than their messages. That is why we are all pathetic. Still, people debate who was greater and who was smaller, whose opinion was better, and so on and so on. We are not debating on the message, but we debate on the messenger. Nothing can be done for those people. So run away from them. You would never leave your phone unlocked in a crowded market. Yet you leave your mind open to every complaint, every rumor, and every fear. Choose what enters. Choose who you listen to. Your thoughts are the seed. Guard the garden.
And this is from my own experience. I'm saying, you know, once you understand what you want, distractions will fall away naturally. You see, I did not put any personal effort to get rid of unwanted ego, unwanted desires, unwanted lust, and unwanted so on and so on. I just fixed my goal, and all those distractions went away. It was so simple, and it was simple all along.
Fifth, take care of your body. You cannot build a tower on a cracked foundation. Sleep, eat well, move, drink plenty of water. I drink a hell of a lot of water. You see, a strong body supports a strong mind, and a strong mind supports a strong life. Health is a quiet wealth that you only notice when it leaves you. So keep that in your mind.
And sixth, sixth, surround yourself with people who stretch you. If everyone around you is comfortable, you will become comfortable. Find people who read more, try more, and dare more than you do. Find people who are more disciplined. You see, I have one friend from Bangalore. His name is Manoj, and he has a wonderful podcast. I will put the link of the podcast in my description so you can have a look at it. You know how disciplined he is. He has life, family life, and he's also doing banking life, yet he finds his time to do his podcast, and he's so passionate about it, and he does a wonderful job. So you must become friends with those people who are disciplined in their life. Discipline brings happiness. You see, you become the average of the voices you allow near you, and be that voice for someone else too.
Now, here's the hard part, and I will not hide it from you. Working on yourself is uncomfortable. Let us all agree that it does not come with applause. Nobody's going to come and say, "Oh, you're a great man." Nothing's going to happen like that. Nobody gives you a bonus for waking up early to study. Nobody throws a party when you finally control your temper. This work is done in silence and often in doubt. The root of the tree grows in darkness long before the branches see the sun.
When I started to see my emotions, observe them without reacting, and started responding, nothing great happened. Nobody said, "Wow, you have changed," and things like that. None of those things is going to happen. But all that is unwanted will leave. You will have a good mind where you can go sleep peacefully. You will have a good heart where you care for those people who need care, not those who do not need care. You know, good people suffer not because they are good. They suffer because they don't know when to stop being good. You want to go help a snake? Good. But don't get angry when the snake bites you. That's how you all must keep it in your head. You want to help those people who do not want to take help. It's fine. But don't be surprised when people betray you. Don't be surprised when people backstab you.
And there will be days when you feel you are getting nowhere. On those days, remember this: progress is invisible while it is happening and obvious when it is done. The person who quits at the dark stages never meets the person they were becoming. So it is important to keep that in your mind. And you will fail. It's okay. Of course you will. If you don't fail, then you are doing it wrong. You will break your promises to yourself. You will fall back into old habits. That is not the end. Failure is not a wall. It is a teacher wearing a rough coat. The one real failure is to stop learning from it. The failure in your life is to follow the messenger and not the message. You are bound to die in regrets if you do not follow the message but follow the messenger. Get up. Adjust. Start again. A hundred restarts are better than one perfect excuse.
Let me ask you to picture yourself five years from now. In the first picture, you worked hard at your job and you did nothing else. You are five years older, a little more tired, a little more stuck, and your dreams are a little more dusty. In the second picture, you worked hard at your job and harder on yourself. You read, you learned, you healed, you practiced. You are five years older, but you are stronger, wiser, more skilled, and more free. I'm telling you from my experience, the moment I started prioritizing my peace, life changed drastically. But let me warn you here: all those people who loved you will leave you if they are unwanted. And all those unwanted circumstances, people, and desires will leave you. Don't be surprised when you are walking alone. Because if you're walking alone, you are real. If you're walking with the crowd, you're fooled. That's the truth.
You see, if that happens, you have more options, more confidence. You have a life that feels like you own it. The same five years will pass either way. Only one version of you will be proud of them.
So here's my challenge to you, starting today. Do not wait for your boss to develop you. Do not wait for your company to train you. Do not wait for some guru, some god to appear and tell you what to do and what not to do. You know, the other day one person was telling me, "If I had more money, I would do more good work." And I told him, it doesn't work like that. Do good work, more money will come. That's how things are happening here. Don't be narrow-minded and say, "Only if that happens, I will do." Start doing, that will happen. That's how it is. Do not wait for some luck to find you. Don't be pathetic people. No one is coming to rescue you, and no one is coming to rescue your potential. It is your job to dig it out. Treat yourself as the most important project you will ever manage, and treat your beloved also like that. Don't keep your marriage as part of your life. Keep your marriage as the whole of your life. Give yourself a plan, a schedule, a standard, and a deadline. Work on your job so that you can eat today. But work on yourself so that you can live tomorrow and forever.
You see, your job pays you for what you do. Your growth pays you for who you become. It is very important to see that. And who you become is the one thing that is entirely in your hands. You cannot control the economy. You cannot control your boss's moods. You cannot control the weather of the world. But you can control the work you do on yourself, hour by hour, choice by choice. The one power nobody can take from you is the power to improve. And the greatest achievement that you can do is to win yourself. Win over yourself.
So go home tonight, or sit and contemplate on what I said. Do one thing, just once. Open a book, or learn a musical instrument. Do something. Write a goal. Take a walk. Maybe call. Make a call you have been avoiding. Begin. The best time to start was years ago. And the second best time is the next minute. Because one day someone will ask you how your life changed, and you will not say, "Oh, I got a better job." You will say, "I became a better person, and everything else followed." Change yourself, and you change your whole world.
Ultimately, I will conclude my speech by saying that: follow the message, not the messenger. You know, all these things are just entertainment. You are the unblemished awareness on which the entire drama of life is happening. You are not the one who has potential, nor the one who gets potential. You are that on which potential and the person who gets potential is existing. You are that awareness which holds, or which gives the ability for the world to exist in the first place. You are that awareness which gives the power for illusion to exist. Now, this can be understood not by listening to me, not by meeting me, not by mailing me, not by having online sessions with me. This can be understood only when you turn your mind within and see things for yourself. Then you will understand that you are only this pure, unblemished, self-aware reality, and not guru, nor goddesses, nor that, nor sin, nor merit, nor tree, nor this, nor that. You are not experience, nor the one who is experiencing. You are that on which experiencing and the experience exist. And you are the self-aware reality which is the substratum of all, whether you like it or not, or believe it or not.
Thank you.
