You Don't Want That Goal, You Want What Comes After It

Always ask yourself: "What next?" Not to bother others, and not to doubt yourself, but to understand what you truly want. A goal tells you where to run. The question "What next?" tells you why you're running. Are you seeing what I'm saying?
Most of us are taught to set goals, right? Get the degree, get the job, buy the house, reach the number, and so on and so on. These are good things, and I am not against them. But a goal is only a door. A door is not a destination. It is only the way into the next room. If you do not know what lies beyond the door, you may spend years knocking on the wrong one. It is important to see that.
Think about a traveler who buys a ticket but never decides where to go. He reaches the station, holds the ticket properly, and then stands still, and so on and so on. But arriving without a purpose is just another way of being lost. Many people reach their goals and feel strangely empty. They did everything right. So why is there no joy? Because they never asked what comes after. What comes after the goal?
So here's the first lesson: before you climb the mountain, ask what you will do at the top. Will you rest? Will you build a home there? Will you look at the view and feel at peace? If the answer is "I will feel peace," then you have learned something very important. You did not want the mountain. You wanted the peace. Are you seeing what I'm saying?
This is the secret hidden inside many of our dreams. We say we want money, but what we really want is safety. We say we want a big position, but what we really want is respect. We say we want fame, but what we really want is to feel that we matter. Behind every loved goal stands a small need, or a quiet need. The question "What next?" helps you hear it.
Let me ask you something. Suppose you achieve your goal tomorrow morning. You wake up and it is done. What do you do at noon? What do you feel in the evening? What do you plan for the next week? If you cannot answer, do not be afraid, because confusion is not failure. It is the first honest step toward clarity. It simply means your goal was built on a guess, and now you can replace the guess with knowledge. Are you seeing what I'm saying?
Many a time we chase what others chase. Our friends want a certain career, so we want it too. Our neighbors buy a certain car, so we dream of it. A borrowed goal is a heavy bag carried for someone else's journey. When you ask "What next?", you put the bag down and check whether anything inside is really yours. That is how it has to be done.
Now do not think this is only about big dreams. It is about small choices too. Why are you studying this subject? What next after the exam? Why are you taking this job? What next after the first salary? Why are you working so hard this year? What next after the hard year? And so on and so on. You see, small questions asked daily save you from large regrets asked late. Keep this in your mind.
There is a great power in knowing what comes after the goal. When you know it, your path becomes clear. Imagine you want a steady life, a calm home, and a satisfied mind. Once you see this, you stop chasing every shiny opportunity. You begin to choose what fits the picture. Right? If a sheep wants to become a lion, it cannot spend its time eating grass and just following blindly like pathetic people. Right? So when the destination is clear, the road stops being confusing. It's as simple as that. You say yes to what builds your peace and no to what disturbs it.
Some people fear this question. They think, "If I look too far ahead, I may lose my motivation." But the truth is that it is the opposite. A person who knows his why can endure almost anyhow. We all have heard that, right? When the work becomes hard, and it will, the picture of what comes after will hold you up. That is why you must not just stay with the goal. You must ask what next after I achieve the goal. If you cannot answer it, then sit and contemplate the answer. That you get "what next after my goal" is the very thing that you're searching for, not the goal. Once you get that in your head, then the goal itself becomes clear. So you must ask this question. Only then it will hold you up. It will remind you that the struggle has meaning, and meaning is the strongest fuel there is.
Others say, "I do not want to plan too much. Let life happen." Right? Life will happen. Yes, rain will fall whether you plan or not. But a man with an umbrella and a man without one do not enjoy the same rain. Planning does not remove surprise. It only prepares your mind so that surprises do not break you. Keep that in your mind.
Remember also that goals can end, but wants continue. You finish a project, a new hunger appears. Even spiritual people are like that. One book is not enough. They want one more book, one more book, one more guru, one more ashram, one more organization, so on and so on and so on. There's nothing wrong with what you believe. But if you believe, you can never see the truth. Those who believe can never see the truth. That's the truth. So it is like that.
Let's say you win a prize, and soon it is just an object on the shelf. So the finish line lasts a moment. The life after it lasts years. That is why the question matters so much. It shifts your attention from the moment of winning to the long road of living.
Here's a general truth that many learn too late: success without satisfaction is a feast eaten without taste. You may have the table full of food, but if your heart is not present, nothing feels sweet. Satisfaction does not come from reaching the top. Please keep that in your mind. Satisfaction does not come by achieving your goals. It comes from reaching the top you actually wanted. Only "What next?" can show you the difference.
When you ask the question "What next?" — suppose I become a doctor, what next? Suppose I become a philosopher, what next? Suppose I become a good husband, what next? So if you ask this question and then you get the answer, then you are actually on the path. Otherwise, you are only on the path but not walking the path.
Let us also speak about steadiness. Many people secretly want a steady life. They want to wake without worry, work without fear, and sleep without heavy thoughts. Yet they chase wild goals that bring more worry, more fear, and more heavy thoughts. If your goal steals the very thing you wanted from it, you have chosen the wrong goal. Be brave enough to change it. There is no shame in correcting a course. You see, the wise do not worship their plans. They serve their purpose. That is the big difference.
Do not be hard on yourself if your answer changes over time. A young person may want adventure. An old person may want rest. It changes. What you want at 20 may not be what you need at 40. And that is growth, not betrayal, or not foolishness. So ask the question again and again. Ask it at every turning point of your life, or ask it every time. Let your answers grow as you grow.
Now let me give you a simple method. Take a quiet moment. Write your goal on paper. Below it, write "And then what?" Answer honestly. Below that answer, write "And then what?" Again, keep going until you reach a feeling, not a thing. That is important. Keep going until you reach the feeling, not a thing. Maybe it is peace. Maybe it is freedom. Maybe it is love or service. Once you know what next, then everything will fall in place. When your answer stops being an object and starts being a feeling, you have found the root. Now build your plan around that truth.
Once you find it, you may discover that you can reach your true want in a simpler way. A person who wants peace may not need a huge fortune. A person who wants respect may not need a grand title. The shortest path to a want is often hidden behind a long list of goals. Ask "What next?" and you may save yourself 10 years of walking. And if the goal is still right, then go for it with full strength. Knowing your "what next" does not weaken your effort. It sharpens it. An arrow that knows its target flies straighter than the one that knows the bow. See, keep that in your mind. You will work with focus. You will refuse distractions, and you will feel that every step has a reason behind it.
Let me tell you about two farmers. The first plans seeds because everyone around him plants seeds. He works hard, but he does not know why. When the harvest comes, he sells it, and he feels nothing. The second farmer plants seeds because he wants his family to live without hunger and his children to go to school. When his harvest comes, he does not just sell it. He plans how it will feed and educate. Two men can carry the same work, and only one of them is truly working. Are you seeing the difference which I just pointed out? The difference is the thought of what comes next.
So this is the thing. Do not live only by the finish line. Live by the picture that waits after it. Let every goal you set carry a second question behind it, like a lamp lit behind a curtain. Without that lamp, you can walk in the dark and call it a journey. With it, you can walk in light and call it a life. Ambition without direction is only noise. Ambition with a "what next" becomes music.
Ask the question when you are happy. And when you are sad, ask it before every decision. Ask it when you're tired and want to quit, because the answer may remind you why you began. And ask it when you succeed, because success is not the end of the story. It's only a new page. Remember, the person who knows what comes after the goal is never really lost, even when the road is long. Such a person walks calmly, chooses wisely, and finishes with a smile, not a sigh.
So sit in your home and ask yourself honestly, without fear: What do I truly want? Not what the world wants for me, not what looks good, not what the gods, goddesses, or guru wants of me. What do I want when everything is done and the noise is gone? Even if you're a spiritual person, it does not matter. Ask this question. What next? You read books, what next? You follow the feet of a guru, what next? You do social service, what next? You are thinking that you're going to get married so that you can go to heaven. That is the most childish thing that you can think of. Gods are fed up with such kind of behavior and such kind of thought process. Let us not behead God by remaining devotees. Let us befriend God by becoming like them. Work on yourself and be divine. And let me tell you something: you are already divine. If you want to believe that you are this pathetic human being who needs to become divine, nobody can come and save you.
So this is the thing. You will find your direction, and you will figure out your way, and you will find your peace. Set your goals, but do not stop there. Ask "What next?" Ask it with courage. Ask it with honesty. Ask it often, because the goal gives you a destination, but the question gives you a destiny. That is important.
Now, enough with the entertainment. Now coming to the main message. You are not destiny. You are not the one who has goals. You are not ashram's organization and pathetic unwanted things that you follow. You are the unblemished self-aware reality on which the entire drama of life is happening. You are the awareness. You are not spiritual experiences, books, methods, and so on and so on. You are already the ocean. All that you are doing is like a wave searching for the ocean. All that you have to do is to recognize that you have been divine from day one. You have been awareness from day one. That's it. You don't need a method to be who you are. A woman does not need a method to be a woman. Fire does not need a meditation to produce heat. A wave does not need to follow gurus and organizations to become the ocean. Don't be an idiot. Don't be pathetic people. Don't fool yourself in this world by thinking you need to become divine. You are divine. That is the truth. If you think you are a human being who needs to become divine, you are fundamentally wrong. You have fooled yourself. That is what I would say.
You are divine. All that is required of you is to recognize the fact that you are awareness, and there is nothing else apart from it. All that you know appears on it. All that you see appears on it. This is the truth. You are not the one who knows. You are not the knowing. You are not the observer. You are not the observed. You are that on which all those things that you name exist.
Now, this can be understood not by listening to me, not by talking to me, not by mailing me, not by meeting me, not by doing anything with me. This can be understood only when you turn your mind. Then you will see how liberated you were always. You were always liberated. We have been fooled for many generations that we are sinners, we are human beings, we need methods to become that. We all have been fooled. A wave does not need a method to be the ocean. A fire does not need a method to produce heat. Similarly, you don't need a method to know who you are. All that you need to do is to recognize that you have been awareness. And that recognition is not done by you or the body or the mind or your guru or the god. That recognition is done by the act of recognizing. Realization is done by the act of realizing. Love is done by the act of love. End of the story.
Ultimately, I will conclude my speech by saying that: follow the message, not the messenger. You are the self-aware reality which is the substratum of all, whether you like it or not, or believe it or not. Thank you.
